In accordance with your instructions, major management issues at University Hospital and your activities as Administrator of the institution were observed, recorded, and assessed for a five-day period [Monday through Friday of last week]. This memorandum provides you with a preliminary report of the findings of this review and assessment. The preliminary findings are presented in relation to the following concerns:
Your actions as administrator that related to the major functions of a manager
Major management problems now confronting you as Administrator of the institution
Your approach to organizational decision-making, with identifications of both solid performance and areas in need of improvement
Recommendations for actions to deal effectively with current major management problems and to preclude future occurrences of such problems
Administrator Actions Related to Major Managerial Functions
Your actions as Administrator on Monday morning in relation to information concerning the probability of two malpractice suits involving the institution were related to the major managerial functions of protecting institutional assets and preserving the confidence of the community in the institution. Although your actions were related to major managerial functions, the level of your involvement in the issue was inappropriate. Dr. McMahon should have investigated the incidents, taken preliminary actions to deal with the problem, and apprised you, as Administrator, of the problem and the preliminary actions to deal with the problem. Then you, as Administrator, would be in a position to assess the probable impact on the institution and direct the implementation of additional actions if warranted.
