We see in the Book of Jeremiah that there is a distinction made between the will and law of God and the will and desires of human beings. The Book of Jeremiah provides us with biographical information and historical context, but it also provides us with a new covenant in the sense that it demonstrates how to seek and find redemption through God. Jeremiah explains the blasphemous behavior of the people in GodÆs eyes, warning that GodÆs destruction is certain. When new laws are imposed, alleged to be the word of Yahweh, Jeremiah is at first enthusiastic but he learns this is a premature enthusiasm. He discovers human beings have a will or desire often conflicts with the will of God. Jeremiah provides us with the lesson that regardless of any laws or mandates, true reform will only occur within the individual when he or she experiences a change of heart that embraces the laws and will of Yahweh. We see since the beginning of his life, the LORD has had a specific purpose for Jeremiah to fulfill as a prophet, ôThou therefore gird up thy loins, and arise, and speak until them all that I command thee: be not dismayed at their faces, lest I confound thee before themö (Jeremiah, 1:17). As such, we see that Jeremiah believes his purpose on earth is to warn people of the errors of their ways, such as the numerous social injustices of the era.
