In both cases, few individuals in these categories reported themselves as needing significant help from family members or peers in managing their daily lives in terms of literacy. Yet, the statistics did also reveal the connection between poverty, job problems, imprisonment, and lower participation in the work force and political life. The serve also indicated that problems for younger adults seemed to be increasing, with young adults scoring lower than their peers did on the 1985 survey. Finally, lower literacy levels were associated with minority group status, and even more so with minority group membership associated with foreign birth (Adult literacy in America, 1993).
