Battle of Hastings

This is an excerpt from the paper...

The history narrative 1066: The Year of the Conquest (1981), by David Howarth, is an account of the year leading up to and ending in the Battle of Hastings and the conquest of England by the Duke William of Normandy. Howarth asserts in his Introduction that his intent was to write not just about the Battle of Hastings, but about the life of the commoner in England during the year that lead up to this event (1981, p. 7). As in his narratives on Waterloo and Trafalgar, he based his studies on accounts contemporary to the events and time period. In this way, he attempts to be accurate while also making logical assumptions and surmises that help ôfill-in-the-blanksö to create a work that flows well while importing necessary as well as sometimes extraordinary facts to the reader. He reminds the reader, however, that ôevery sentence in a story nine centuries old should include the word perhapsö (Howarth, 1981, p. 8).
