Jonathon Kozol (1-2) argues in Rachel and Her Children: Homeless Families in America that the cause of homelessness is simply a lack of housing. The families he describes in this book, including the woman he calls Rachel, and her children, are people who find themselves without a home for one of several reasons. The conversion of rental units to condominiums, fires, the demolition of blighted housing, rents that skyrocket, loss of income or a wage earner, or some calamity that makes it impossible to pay rent are the primary reasons that people like Rachel and her children find it all but impossible to obtain permanent housing (Kozol, 5-7).
