Maturing in Literature

This is an excerpt from the paper...

The speakers or characters in the works of Updike, Bambara, Housman, and Cummings experience a maturation process or share light on one already experienced. In so doing, these characters and speakers seem to imply that the maturation process has a particular impact on individual development. If the examples in A & P, The Lesson, When I was One and Twenty, and in Just, seem to reveal that the biggest lessons learned revolve around authority, identity, love, and wisdom.

In A & P, Sammy matures through his experiences while working at the local grocery. The store manager, Lengel, has all the authority and often misuses it in SammyÆs mind. LengelÆs treatment of three girls in their swimwear irritates Sammy. Lengel tells them ôGirls, this ainÆt the beachö (Updike 855). Sammy is bored by the dull routine of the store and the girls awaken excitement in him. They awaken a growing sexual awareness as well as his differences with Mr. LengelÆs authority. When Mr. Lengel embarrasses the girls, Sammy becomes aware of a moral dilemma and abruptly quits his job. He has matured to know that when his moral conscience dictates what he believes is right, he must act upon it even when there are consequences. Sammy grows from this experience but knows it will be difficult to stick to his principles in the face of severe consequences, ôHis face was dark gray and his back stiff, as if heÆd just had an injection of iron, and my stomach kind of fell as I felt how
