Maturing in Literature

In A & P, Sammy matures through his experiences while working at the local grocery. The store manager, Lengel, has all the authority and often misuses it in SammyÆs mind. LengelÆs treatment of three girls in their swimwear irritates Sammy. Lengel tells them ôGirls, this ainÆt the beachö (Updike 855). Sammy is bored by the dull routine of the store and the girls awaken excitement in him. They awaken a growing sexual awareness as well as his differences with Mr. LengelÆs authority. When Mr. Lengel embarrasses the girls, Sammy becomes aware of a moral dilemma and abruptly quits his job. He has matured to know that when his moral conscience dictates what he believes is right, he must act upon it even when there are consequences.
