Historical Politics

Two articles entitled ôNew York Politicsö and ôPolitics in Mississippi û Col Jefferson Davis û The Union Partyö tell us a good deal about politics of the era. Both articlesÆ headlines are straightforward and without instigation or motive, but they also both clearly denote the ôstateö in which the political activities are occurring, New York and Mississippi. As to the layout of each article, they are fairly identical considering they are from two different newspapers in two different regions of the country. Both are in block text and single-column format, though the ôPolitics in Mississippiö article is contained in five paragraphs while the ôNew York Politicsö article takes nine paragraphs to convey its information.

With respect to subject matter, the ôNew York Politicsö article is quite informative about the politics of the era. The article explains that the Hunkers and the Radicals both held their conventions in New York en route to the November election, or what the author refers to as a ôcontest,ö (New York, p. 2). Ironically, the two parties seem in conflict as much as any partisan conflict between modern day Republicans and Democrats, with both the Hunkers and Radicals vying for power and supremacy during their respective conventions. The conventions were held in Syracuse and the depiction of the conflicting parties is quite reminiscent of todayÆs antagonism between Republicans and Democrats. Though the Hunkers are reported to have been shocked that their power was ôsuddenly smitten from their handsö by the Radicals, the description of the inability for bipartisan cooperation sounds all too familiar to modern ears, (New York, p. 2). As the reporter writes, ôThe ill-feeling which has been growing up between the two parties, during the past few years, was still so strong as to make the task of harmonizing one of no little difficulty,ö (New York, p. 2).
