Recommendations for Expanding Services Provided by Means and Bolton (1994) shed light on their investigation of employability services provided by independent living programs (ILPs), offer conclusions for a variety of stakeholders involved with ILPs, and provide recommendations in öRecommendations for Expanding Services Provided by Independent Living Programs." The authors unveil the conclusions and recommendations based on their research involving four ILP sites. The article begins with an explanation of how rehabilitation services for persons with disabilities are in a state of flux. An explanation of the implementation of ILPs is then provided, including a focus on the variability involved in such institutions in both the ôtype and amount of servicesö provided to communities (Means et al. 1994, 20). The authors then describe the research process and procedures of their qualitative study that includes how the sites were selected, a description of the chosen sites, a description of the intervention, and how the selected sites were involved in the project. The authors provide a variety of statistics and facts that about ILPs that leads them to conclude ôILPs have an emerging role in the delivery of employment servicesö (Means et al. 1994 21). Despite the researchers making some excellent recommendations across a wide variety of stakeholders, their research suffers from a lack of quantitative support. The authors rely exclusively on raw data that is heavily prone to bias or human errors, thus making their numerous conclusions lack a high degree of validity. In addition, the researchersÆ criteria for selecting sites are difficult to repeat and are too small to represent the general population of ILPs or consumers of them. Yet, the authorsÆ work provides insight and understanding as an exploration of the current state of various ILPs and their ability and challenges in providing employability services.
