Back Up Power Generator
This is an excerpt from the paper...
Justification: Natural disasters rarely give advance notice. The normal power feed can be shut down to a manufacturing facility at any time as a result of an accident or a surge in demand on the power grid as a whole. As the recent massive power outage in the northeastern United States proved, sometimes the power companies are unable to restore power to all of their customers for hours or even days. The intent of this project is to install a back up diesel power generator capable of supplying sufficient power for the entire building. The goal would be for this generator to start automatically when normal power delivery from the power grid is interrupted and run for up to eight hours. There are several reasons the company needs to purchase a back up generator. First, many customers are on Just in Time contracts and require deliveries on a very tight schedule. If we are unable to ship because of a power outage, there can be significant monetary penalties and potentially even the loss of a valued customer. Another justification for acquiring this generator involves the fact that many of our customers place orders electronically and over the Internet. Without back up power, we will not receive these orders because PCs, server, fax machines and other electrical equipment will not work. The MIS department believes that a back up generator may prevent the loss of valuable data that is not yet backed up by users if the buffer between power loss and

will have overall responsibility for completing this project on time and at or under budget. The Project Manager should be delegated sufficient authority and adequate resources to ensure the project employees complete the project on time. His or her scope of authority should be sufficient to allow certain decisions to be made æon the spotÆ but not so much authority that major project decisions are not discussed and approved by senior management. The Project Manager selected must possess the expertise as well as the organizational skills necessary to manage the successful completion of the assignment. A Project Manager that lacks the necessary organizational and interpersonal skills, notwithstanding their technical qualifications, is likely to fail even when the project in question is relatively simple such as in this case study. Jim Citrin (2002) writes that a Project Manager should act as a refereeùthe person who steps back from the fray, synthesizes the respective arguments, and makes sure things are moving forward rather than in a circle (Citrin, 2002).
Once the timeline and a preliminary budget was established, the company President required periodic updates, and required a formal status report at the mid-point of the projec
