Much Ado About Nothing

ShakespeareÆs Much Ado About Nothing illustrates the haziness and trials of true love. In the play we are presented with tow very different sets of lovers. Beatrice and Benedick ôinsult and tease each other mercilessly, all the while proclaiming that marriage is not for themö (Kaufman 2001, 24). Hero and Claudio fall instantly in love, however their love is easily disrupted by the forces of rumor, gossip, and mistrust. Therefore, even though Beatrice and Benedick proclaim they are not of a marriage mind, they are better suited for love than Hero and Claudio because they are more mature and experienced in the vagaries and agonies of love. it is Beatrice and Benedick who supply both the wit, and ultimately, the true love, while it is Hero and Claudio who demonstrate that slander and a more superficial understanding of what constitutes lover are antithetical to a coupleÆs happiness.

According to Mattingly (2001), Beatrice and Benedick ôtrade verbal barbs, but underneath they love each otherö (21). However, the Cupid in Much Ado About Nothing does not work in a traditional manner, Instead, he has an arrow that according to Hero ôOnly wounds by hearsayö (Hunt 2000, 165). Hearsay, rumor, and gossip in the play has a much greater impact on Hero than it does either Beatrice or Benedick, because of the mistrust she has for her beloved, Claudio.
