Sacrifice of the Mass
Vatican II also reformed the definition of the Sacrifice of the Mass. The definition approved by the Council of Vatican II defines the Mass as ôa service and a collegial, ecumenical communion.ö Many argued that such a definition of the Mass was such a profound change that it was more fitting for Protestantism than Catholicism. Many worried that such a change exaggerated the part played by the laity in Mass, relegating the priest to a role more like that of a president in a democracy. Critics of the reform argued that the place of the liturgy of the word has been given such importance by the Council that the Sacrifice has been obliterated in significance.
