Special Interest Groups

This is an excerpt from the paper...

The proposal by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg for a new $1.4 billion stadium on ManhattanÆs West Side is intended as the new home for the New York Jets and a bid to win the 2012 Olympics (New, 2004, p. 1). The interest groups backing the proposed stadium include city and state officials, including New York Governor George Pataki, the New York Jets and its owner, and various construction and architectural firms that will be awarded major contracts in the design and construction of the stadium. New York City Council members are outraged over BloombergÆs efforts to run an end-around the Council to get approval for the stadium. Councilman Gifford Miller (2005, [1], p. 1) argued, ôMayor Bloomberg has not come clean about the most recent financial burden the CityÆs taxpayers will be forced to carry.ö This analysis will discuss the special interest group interactions and issues revealed by the fight for a new stadium.

The special interest groups benefited by the new stadium in Manhattan are primarily members of the wealthy and elite classes of society. The primary demographic target of the stadium funding proposal are the wealthy officials and legislators of the state and city of New York. Mayor BloombergÆs proposal is a wasteful spending of taxpayer dollars according to Gifford Miller. Miller (2005, [1], p. 1)maintains that city taxpayers will have to fork over $300 million for a State subsidy, a City subsidy of $300 million
