The two papers I have composed on the ôAmerican Dreamö and ôArt,ö clearly demonstrate that the beliefs, norms, and values of a culture impact both the taste and styles of art that culture produces as well as defining and proscribing access to upward mobility that is characteristic of the ôAmerican Dream.ö However, in composing these two essays, I have discovered the a cultureÆs beliefs, norms, and values are seldom achieve by consensus or in an egalitarian fashion, even in a democracy. Instead, the beliefs, norms, and values of any culture often trickle down from those elite and powerful groups in society who perpetuate and reinforce the beliefs, norms, and values that protect their own interests through social institutions they often control. The premise underlying the ôAmerican Dreamö and democracy is that we live in an egalitarian society in which there is a high degree of mobility among social groups.
