The research paper I wrote on stem cell research incorporated a number of academic research and writing techniques offered by the Little, Brown text. For example, I created a "list of terms that related[d] to [my] subject" and used the WWW and University of Phoenix Library Online Collection to conduct searches of the terms (p. 17). I also took advantage of making notes "on what the content" or research articles I read "made me think" (p. 19). However, in retrospect, I could have used a few different tools to help enhance my research process. Critical thinking is an important aspect of research writing, primarily because it helps to uncover creative alternatives that might remain obscure otherwise. For example, by using synthesis I could have illustrated more ways in which different "elements" of the stem cell issue "relate to each other" or how the "subject relate[d] to another one" (p. 20). For example, by applying synthesis to the stem cell research issues, I might have uncovered how the connection between politics, the religious right, and science is significant to outcomes in stem cell research.
