Bill Clinton and the Arts

This is an excerpt from the paper...

The impact of the arts on Bill Clinton began when, as a small boy, he lived with his family in the South, terribly poor. His father was a traveling salesman and bigamist, and his father died in a car accident leaving them even worse off economically (Lowry 2004). Despite these humble origins, Clinton was surrounded by African Americans. He remembers in his recent autobiography My Life that his family taught him so that he never knew other people exhibited hatred toward African Americans (Lowry 2004). African Americans and the radio turned Clinton on to the joys of music and jazz. His love of jazz drove him to learn to play the saxophone and gain the benefits of an appreciation of the arts. As he says in his speech at an Arts and Humanities Award ceremony which counted Eddy Arnold among its honorees: ôI could still remember when I was a very young boy listening to him sing on the radio before my family even had a televisionö (Clinton 2000, 3133). ClintonÆs experiences with the arts shaped his developed, as evidenced in his time as president and now citizen of the United States.
