Insurrection

David Webber and Steven WhiteÆs (1990) Insurrection is a science fiction novel whose story is a loosely disguised intergalactic version of the American War of Independence. The dominance of the Corporate Worlds over the Fringe Worlds has split the Terran Federation both politically and militarily. The Inner World leaders have exploited the Outer World populations politically, economically, and militarily in their war against the Khanate. Once the war ends, the Inner World populations are remiss to relinquish the newfound powers won during the conflict. To counteract the increasing power of the Fringe Worlds, the leaders of the Corporate Worlds admit the Khanate to the Federation. Faced with growing exploitation and dominance, the Fringe Worlds mount an insurrection.

After helping the Corporate Worlds defeat the Orion Khanate, the Fringe Worlds are determined to maintain the power they have accumulated. However, the Corporate Worlds are unwilling to relinquish power and invite the Khanate into the Legislative Assembly of the Terran Federation to help quash the Outer Worlds. The story is a parallel of the American War of Independence, with the Fringe Worlds representing the American Colonies and the Corporate Worlds representing British forces. Like the local militias of the Colonies resisted British power, so the Fringe Worlds resist the efforts of the Corporate Worlds. Fed up with British dominance and exploitation of the Colonies, its leadersÆ perceptions of British leadership mirror those of Fionna toward the Federation, ôAfter twenty-five years in the AssemblyàFionna had learned the bitter, sordid realities of the FederationÆs governmentö (White and Weber 1990, 7).

The Fringe WorldsÆ people are aware of the exploitation of their people and resources by the Corporate Worlds. When their attempts to call them to task for such exploitation is thwarted by Fringe World leaders, the
