As a casual listener of music, especially with something as complex and sophisticated as WagnerĘs Gotterdammerung, I listened to this history, legend and myth of German Gods for its impact on my mood. The performance of this opera occurred in an open style, with the full instrumentation of an orchestra including woodwinds, strings, percussion, horns and other instruments. Act III of Gotterdammerung is the climax portion of this piece of music and story that is considered but one of WagnerĘs masterpieces. The third act is of monumental importance, as its action encompasses the destruction of the old gods, the return of the symbolic ring to its proper place, and a cleansing of the corruption of the past. Wagner provides both unity and variety in this section of Gotterdammerung. He uses a number of motives that help define character, emphasize action and increase emotion in this section.
