In Kurt VonnegutÆs Slaughterhouse-Five, we are told that the Tralfamadorians view ôevery creature and plant in the universe as a machine,ö (Vonnegut 1969, 196). The Tralfamadorians are significant in the story because they think and view the universe differently than humans, particularly the hero Billy Pilgrim. During the Allied firebombing, Billy lived through the Dresden slaughterhouse. Pilgrim is abducted by the Tralfamadorians, who cage him and display him in a zoo. Billy is regarded by his captors as stupid, because they find his understanding of life and the universe absurd in the extreme (Vonnegut 1969, 116-117). Billy is placed in a zoo on Tralfamador, where his surroundings in the zoo replicate his life on earth. VonnegutÆs main theme in expressing the views of the Tralfamadorians is the absurdity of war and death.
