Religion Comparison

This is an excerpt from the paper...

Islam, Judaism, and Christianity share many salient features. All three of these major world religions posit the existence of a single God, or a monotheistic deity. In Christianity, however, it is held that the single God is possessed of three natures, that of God the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit (Fisher 1999, 284). Despite differences, at their core all three religions share the theme of right living and social interaction based upon it, as demonstrated in the following precepts from each religion:

Christianity: Thou shall not steal; Thou shall not commit adultery; Honor they mother and father (Christianity 2004, 2).

Islam: Religion is based on reward and punishment; be good and you will be rewarded, be bad and you will be punished on the terrible day of reckoning (Islam 2004, 1).

Judaism: Refrain from incest, bloodshed, robbery, injustice and lawlessness, inhuman conduct, and idolatry (Judaism 2004, 1).

This brief report will discuss these three major world religions with regard to their views on God, history, salvation, prophecy, ecclesiastical organization, and women, showing differences and similarities among them.

There are also numerous Orthodox Christian groups, a number of which are affiliated or associated with a particular country or region of the world. Given that all three of these religions believe in a creator-God, they share an understanding of manÆs historical development. All three religions trace their descent from Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden. Of the three religions, Judaism is the oldest and Islam is the youngest. Both Judaism and Christianity had been established when Allah revealed himself to Muhammad around 610, Christian Era (Fisher 1999, 346). It is conceivable to argue that Judaism serves as the springboard from which both Christianity and Islam have emerged. Certainly, there are many elements of Judaism that are contained in both Islam and Christianity. The belief in a single God, a reliance on revelation and prophecy, the expectation of sal
