This is an excerpt from the paper...
In the film Beloved (1998), director Jonathan Demme provides us with myriad emotions based on the horrific nature of slavery in U.S. society. Slavery was politically, economically and socially justified and accepted during the 1700s and 1800s in American society. As such, many individuals, like the characters Sethe and Paul D were exposed to inhuman abuse and the vilest form of racism and prejudice. We see that the love that develops between Sethe and Paul D is a loved that is based on pain and loss. They are drawn to each other by a kind of love that is based on deprivation and scarring from the past. As Paul D learns more about Sethe, however, he becomes more concerned about the dark places in her soul due to the impact of the abuses she suffered under slavery. Paul D does not like how Sethe caters to Denver and he does not wish Beloved to become a part of the household. Paul D, however, believes that his love will bring healing and redemption to the strange, haunted household of Sethe and Denver. Paul DÆs love for Sethe is the inspiration and foundation she needs to find greater understanding and healing, because it is his love that enables her to face the truth of her past. Paul D must attempt to forge a new kind of love in Sethe, one that enables her to free herself of the ghosts of the past and find healing. As he tells her, ôYour love is too thick, Sethe,ö to which she initially replies, ôLove is or isnÆt Paul D. Thin love is no love at allö (D
