The Apostle Peter
This is an excerpt from the paper...
In the New Testament, Peter the Apostle is one of the most significant of JesusÆ twelve apostles. Simon ben Jonah is PeterÆs original name, but when Jesus encountered Simon and his brother fishing he said: ôThou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is interpreted Peter.ö There are numerous mentions of Peter, later Saint Peter, during his apostolic life in the New Testament Gospels and Acts. It is in Act 15:14 that PeterÆs original name was ôSimonö or ôSimeon.ö As Peter, which translates in Aramaic as ôrock,ö it is shown that Christ viewed Peter as the ôfoundation rock,ö according to Matthew, and Perkins argues that Peter serves as ôthe basis for the tradition of Christian practice.ö Though Peter will deny Jesus three times before he is crucified, Peter is viewed as a model for Christians to follow. By the laying on of hands, Peter and John provide the gift of the Holy Ghost through the baptism ritual in Acts 8:12, ôBut when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.ö Therefore, while Perkins may be correct in arguing Peter was more of a centrist in teaching ChristÆs philosophy she may be wrong in suggesting that PeterÆs primacy is not laid out in the New Testament in the Acts and other parts.
It is also shown in the Acts that Peter is the leader most times when appearing in a setting with other Apostles and when providing lessons about the true follower of Christ, for which he represents a model. It is demonstrated clearly in Acts 8:18 when Peter rebukes for offering money to receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. PeterÆs response involves a number of important Christian doctrines, such as th
