WichertÆs book focuses on the social and economic factors affecting Northern Ireland from 1945 to the 1980s. WichertÆs main theme is that the present troubles in Northern Ireland are due to the failure to resolve problems stemming from IrelandÆs partition. The author claims that the reforms of unionism under Terence OÆNeill have been inadequate to improve the economy or the nation in any manner that appeases Catholics without offending Protestants. The book takes an economic focus, providing the economic changes and state interventions that have occurred, followed by the reactions of different significant groups to them.
