George Lucas Enterprises

George Lucas left American Zoetrope, an independent film studio he co-founded with Francis Ford Coppola, to form his own company, Lucasfilm in 1971. With five of the top ten all time grossing films in Hollywood history, today Lucasfilm Ltd. is a billion dollar a year enterprise that has spawned a number of subsidiaries and affiliates. The most successful independent film studio in Hollywood history is located in San Rafael, California, at LucasÆ Skywalker Ranch. The ranch is dedicated to film production and Lucas financed the 6,000 complex with its own fire department with his multimillion dollar earnings from a string of hits including American Graffiti, the Star Wars series, and the Raiders of the Lost Ark series (Armbruster 1999).

The company generated enormous success with American Graffiti, but when it came time to finance LucasÆ trilogy of films akin to a teenage space opera studios balked at financing the film. Lucas made a deal with 20th Century Fox to finance the $10 million Stars Wars, with Lucas giving up his directing fee for a percentage of the box-office take and all merchandising rights (Hoovers 2003). With the success of the Star Wars films, Lucas created Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) and Skywalker Sound to produce the visual and sound effects for the film. Skywalker Sound is a post production facility. Later Lucas would create THX, based on a new sound system and as a way of monitoring exhibition sound quality. He also founded LucasArts Entertainment Company LLC, Lucas Digital Ltd. LLC, Lucas Licensing Ltd., and Lucas Learning Ltd.

George Lucas is the Chairman of the Board of Lucasfilm Ltd. and all of these companies which are subsidiaries under the Lucasfilm umbrella.
