The Mycenaean Period of Ancient Greece

The Mycenaean period in Ancient Greek history lasted from approximately 1600 to 1100 B.C. (Mycenaean 1). The Mycenaean culture was fairly sophisticated, with a system of religion or mythology, politics, and acted as an influence on later Greek civilization. This discussion will reflect on Mycenaean literature, mythology, politics and culture.

The literature of the Mycenaean culture involved a new script that was crafted by Palace Scribes during this era. Known as ôLinear B,ö this script records early Greek language and provides historians with an account of the social organization of the Ancient Greeks (Mycenaean 1). According to one Linear B tablet from the Mycenaean Palace at Pylos, ôthe king stood at the head of a highly organized feudal systemö (Mycenaean 1). Instead of the pictographic hieroglyphic script of the Minoans or their Linear A script, the Mycenaean Linear B script is considered ômore elaborate and efficientö (Ages 1).

Mycenaean politics included a dynastic monarchy of kings that ruled from Mycenae, a Greek stronghold. Because of the heavy trade engaged in by the Mycenaeans, their political rulers became quite powerful. It is also understood that the Mycenae kings were superior legislators. As one historian notes, ôTheir new palaces developed into political, economic, administrative and religious centers. Their rules go down in Greek legend as great lawmakersö (Ages 1).

The culture of Mycenae revolved around trade and the construction of great works of art and architecture, including the Palace of Mycenae which is one of the best preserved of its kind. The Mycenae religion is difficult to determine because there are only a handful of ruins and fragments of writing that remain intact from the period. However, as one historian asserts, ôMycenaean religion was almost certainly polytheistic, and the Mycenaeans were actively syncretistic, adding foreign gods to their pantheon of gods w
