2 Recorded Emotional Incidents from a Journal

One incident from my journal during which I experiences a strong emotion stemmed from a rafting trip I took with some friends. I had not worked out for a long time, even though my friends are active and athletic and go to the gym a good deal. We prepared our rafts for what would be a four-hour journey down the river. Because it was extremely warm and nothing in the raft stays dry, everyone took off their shirts and shoes and left on only their shorts. I did the same. However, due to not working out for a long period of time, my physical appearance paled in comparison to that of my friends. One of my friends even said, ôYouÆre going to need a bra soon if you donÆt lose some weight.ö My buddies thought this was funny and laughed. I laughed as well. My laughter, however, was an attempt to cover my profound humiliation. While not obese I had let myself go to a point where I was unhappy with my appearance. I was so humiliated it was hard to enjoy the rafting trip or much else that day. When I got home I was still feeling humiliation and determined that I would begin going to the gym on a regular basis the very next day. Since that time I have gotten myself into the condition where I am at least not humiliated over my physical appearance in front of others.

One aspect of the impact of being humiliated is behavior change. I think we feel humiliation because we are often motivated to change our behavior when we do. For example, if someone burps out loud in front of others they are often humiliated and attempt not to do so in front of others from that point on. Likewise, my abject humiliation in front of my friends on my rafting trip caused me to get myself back into the gym on a regular basis. In this manner, humiliation is selected from an evolutionary standpoint in order to help us adopt behaviors that are more geared for success and survival. In the case of the
