The epic Sir Gawain and the Green Knight tells the tale of a Sir Gawain, a man wholly dedicated to Christian ideals and Arthurian virtues. Sir Gawain cherishes the knightly ideals of courtly and martial prowess, but within the tale those ideals will be sorely tested in difficult circumstances. When he is under pressure, Sir GawainĘs courtly and martial skills fail him. He is not forthright about the green girdle, he is not honest with the Green Knight, and he discovers that one of ArthurĘs greatest knights is powerless to help himself. When the Green Knight spares his life, Sir Gawain comes to the recognition that the highest aim of Christianity is true understanding of what God demands from men. Courtly and martial skills pale beside a humble and contrite heart.The story of Sir Gawain revolves around a knightly challenge. A knight asks Sir Gawain to give him a blow with an axe. In return, Gawain is to meet the knight a year afterward at his home in Green Chapel. After beheading the knight, the knight recovers his severed head and rides off after reminding Sir Gawain of their future engagement. When Gawain arrives at a castle near Green Chapel, he encounters the wife of the knight who resides there. She attempts to seduce Sir Gawain.
