The artifact from Tell Asmar known as "Standing Man" is typical of many sculptures from this ancient Middle East civilization. In my own words, the "Standing Man" depicts a tall, older man with a long beard and long hair who is standing erect with his hands brought in front of him in a clasp. When I view this artifact, I observe a stately figure that appears strong, of almost regal bearing, and one who seems to project wisdom and positive energy from his facial expression. Despite my impressions, on deeper analysis the "Standing Man" represents much more about Sumerians, their culture, and their values. A creation of Sumerian artists, the "Standing Man," according to Riebold Benton and DiYanni (2005, p. 10), is "àeasily recognized by [its] large eyes, single eyebrow, and seemingly asymmetric facial expression." The "Standing Man" tells quite an interesting story about the Sumerians and their culture and values.
