The culture of the United States during the women's suffrage movement from 1890-1920 was still one dominated by Victorian values. Biologically, socially, and economically, women were relegated to the status of second-class citizens in comparison to men. In The Ideas of the Woman Suffrage Movement, Aileen Kraditor tells that one anti-suffragist Florida Congressman openly stated that woman "àwas made man's helper, was given a servient place and man the dominant in the vision of labor" (14). Among middle-class women, the full-time roles of housewife and mother were the only two available for or deemed fitting for women. Despite this mentality and the rigid roles assigned to women due gender, a handful of women mobilized the suffrage movement that would result in women being permitted the vote via the 19th Amendment in 1920.
