The two most significant political scandals of substance since 1970 have been Watergate and the Iran/Contra Affair, under the Nixon and Reagan administrations respectively. In the former scandal, critics of President Nixon maintain that he undermined the electoral process and tried to expand the powers of the Executive Branch beyond their constitutional scope, the result of his knowledge of and participation in the cover-up of an attempted break in into the Democratic National Headquarters at the Watergate Hotel. In the latter scandal, critics of President Reagan and his administration maintain that by diverting funds from sales of arms to Iran to support contra military operations in Nicaragua, the White House was guilty of violating an embargo on arms sales to Iran as well as providing support to the paramilitary activities in Nicaragua against congressional prohibition. Both scandals erupted in major controversy, the first forcing the resignation of President Nixon who was facing certain impeachment and the latter undermined public trust in government foreign policy as well as the integrity of the Reagan White House which purposely conspire to keep unauthorized activities hidden from Congress and the American people.
