In The Station Agent, Finbar ôFinö McBride is a lonely dwarf who inherits an abandoned trains station when its owner, his only friend, dies. He moves to the station in Newfoundland, New Jersey, where he expects to live a life of solitude. He knows most people are interested only in his height, and he has pretty much given up on any hopes for a normal social life and relationships. Into his life comes another lonely woman seeking solitude after the death of her child, Olivia Harris, and a lonely coffee shop owner, Joe Oramas, who deals with his loneliness by being gregarious. Through his loud and repeated efforts at communication, Joe Oramas helps Fin discover the possibility of friendship. As Wood (2003) maintains, ôàcommunication in its many forms is central to personal and social lifeö (p. 2). In The Station Agent, Fin being a dwarf has made him a reclusive and lonely soul with defense mechanisms against the attempts of others to get closer to him through communication.
