In this chapter from I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Angelou depicts the evening of her childhood when Joe Louis beat a white challenger to remain Heavyweight Champion of the world. Throughout the depiction of the fight, Angelou builds suspense in a variety of ways. One of the first ways is by interrupting the flow of the fight as broadcast on the radio with the narratorÆs depiction of the people in the room, the childrenÆs behavior, and accounts of African American suffering. AngelouÆs description of the moods and behavior of the crowd between depictions of the fight greatly add to the suspense. The crowd ôgruntsö, gives its ômurmuring assentö and at one point, when Louis is on the ropes, is suspended in anxiety: ôWe didnÆt breathe. We didnÆt hope. We waitedö (Angelou 88).
