One-third of all Americans over 12 years of age have tried marijuana (Marijuana 2003, 18). New findings regarding the adverse impact of long-term use of marijuana combined with concern over high and growing prevalence of marijuana use have resulted in greater need for studies measuring the deleterious impact on psyche and cognition of long-term marijuana users. From recent findings of cannabinoid receptors in animal brains to research results pointing to impaired memory and cognition in long-term marijuana users, the conventional wisdom that marijuana has no lasting long-term deleterious impact on users is eroding. This research will address the latest findings related to deleterious psyche and cognitive effects in long-term marijuana users. A conclusion will address the importance of these findings for future research. This review of literature was developed through a thorough search of online peer-reviewed journal databases like EBSCO Host, ProQuest, and others. All research related to long-term marijuana use and its impact on psyche and cognition was reviewed for pertinence to the present research and validity. A number of research studies that were most pertinent were printed, read, reread and highlighted, and then organized into different topic issues.
