The Death Penalty & a Moral Society

There are 86,400 seconds in a twenty-four hour day -- 31,536,000 seconds in a year. A murderer is the ultimate thief. He steals time. Time, unfortunately is a commodity that may not be restored such as money or other tangible items may. Life cannot be replaced. The capital offenderÆs disregard for the life of others puts them at a place where their life may be required in return.

Capital Punishment is actually not a moral deterrent because there are no proven direct correlations in studies between patterns in executions and the steady rate of crime; after execution, the murder rate has actually been proven to substantially increase rather than decrease; and children in the U.S. do not witness capital executions and thus, do not benefit from viewing the punishment event. The Death Penalty is unethically utilized discriminatorily against minorities, the poor and uneducated. Capital Punishment consumes more economic resources in the event of a capital trial than life term incarceration while diverting funds from much needed social programs used to attack crime before it begins.

Since its re-implementation, the Death Penalty has been hotly debated among both proponents and opponents. While proponents maintain it metes out proper justice by taking a life in exchange for that life taking a life, opponents maintain it is cruel and unusual punishment, costly and does not deter future capital offenders.

One of the most debated reasons why people oppose the death penalty is that they see it as targeting minorities. Of the inmates now on Death Row, there seems a disproportionate amount fall into the categories of racial minorities.

A second oft cited reason for opposing the death penalty is that of the inequality presented to offenders when gender is at issue.
