Tradition & Change in India, China, Japan

The purpose of this essay is to compare and contrast the issue of tradition and change in India, China, and Japan, during the period from roughly A.D. 300 to 1400. It will touch briefly on the major political, social, and religious developments.

In India, this era began with the formation of a new central authority, the Gupta Empire, which reigned from 320 to 480, and sparked a cultural renaissance that has influenced Indian society ever since. The Gupta Empire was followed by a period of political fragmentation, which was followed by the long era of Moslem conquest, which began in 636 and led to the conquest of the Ganges valley by 1206. Moslem control over the Indian subcontinent was relatively short-lived; by 1336 a native Indian kingdom in the south achieved independence. After the sack of India by Timur in 1398, the country was as politically fragmented as it had ever been.

During this era, however, Hinduism flourished. Buddhism was completely pushed out, and only about 25 percent of the population, mostly from the lowest castes, was ever converted to Islam.
