Political Split on Iraqi War
This is an excerpt from the paper...
According to many analysts, there is a measurable and increasing political split in the United States based on the biological sex of adult Americans (Jacobson, 2003). This political split is referred popularly as the ôgender gapö, which Jacobson (2003) says approximates nine-percent, with women being somewhat less conservative politically and less likely to favor war than men. Bumiller (2004) writing in the New York Times notes, however, that many American women support the action of President Bush in striking Iraq in the absence of any precipitating action by Iraq against the United States. The purpose of this study is to examine the support for and opposition to the policies and actions of President Bush with respect to the war on Iraq with an objective of assessing the credibility of a gender gap on this issue. Two hypotheses are tested in this study, as follows: Support for or opposition to the policies and action of President Bush in relation to the war on Iraq does not vary to a statistically significant extent in relation to the gender of adult Americans. Support for or opposition to the policies and action of President Bush in relation to the war on Iraq does vary to a statistically significant extent in relation to the level of formal educational attainment of adult Americans; however, these variations lose their significance when gender is factored into the equation. The data required to test the hypotheses were obtained from the Pew Rese

Confidence Intervals
Confidence intervals provide a range of responses around the mean value of a variable at a specified level of confidence. For this study, the specified level of confidence is 95%, which means that 19 times out of 20 sample of a given population will yield a mean value within the confidence interval range. The confidence intervals are presented separately by question investigated.
Approve or Disapprove of the PresidentÆs Dealing with the War
Males:
Mean response: 1.53
Sample size: 415
Standard deviation: 1.645
Value of 95% confidence: 1.96
Confidence Interval = 1.53 + 1.96(1.645/SqRt415)
= 1.53 + 0.16
Lower Limit of Confidence = 1.37
Upper Limit of Confidence = 1.69
Females:
Mean response: 1.70
Sample size: 457
Standard deviation: 1.997
Value of 95% confidence: 1.96
Confidence Interval = 1.70 + 1.96(1.997/SqRt457)
= 1.70 + 0.18
Lower Limit of Confidence = 1.52
Upper Limit of Confidence = 1.88
Total:
Mean response: 1.62
Sample size: 872
Standard deviation: 1.841
Value of 95% confidence: 1.96
Confidence Interval = 1.62 + 1.96(1.841/SqRt872)
= 1.62 + 0.12
