The National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship1. The social impact goals of the NFTE were to promote entrepreneurial literacy among at-risk and economically or physically disadvantaged minority youth living in AmericaÆs inner cities, and to help each of them start their own business. NFTEÆs operating model for making this program work is complex. First, as a non-profit organization it must solicit funds from donors in order to operate. Next, it must hire individuals in staff positions. Third, it must train motivated people about how to become instructors capable of working effectively with disadvantaged inner city youth. Next, NFTE must develop working relationships with other non-governmental entities and not-for-profit organizations when both NFTE and the other organization have something to gain from collaboration. Fifth, NTFE must use the grant money it receives in the way the donors have designated. For example, many donors only want their grant spent on certain projects, such as providing seed money for micro-businesses started by graduates of the entrepreneurship program. NFTEÆs program is not working as well as its founder had hoped. To some extent, NFTE is a victim of its own success. As the organization grew, demand for its services began to outstrip supply.
