During college, I experienced an ethical conflict with one of my professors. This professor, D.S., did not teach in my major course of study but did teach in the education department, and I was working toward a teaching certificate so that I could teach in my major field. D.S. asked me for a date, and I refused, feeling awkward about the idea of dating one of my teachers. Shortly after saying ônoö on the phone, however, I ran into D.S.ùwho had the look of someone who had been cryingùon campus. Feeling guilty about causing such distress, I backtracked and accepted the date after all. We went out only a few times, but the situation continued to be awkward, and we stopped dating shortly after. A few weeks later, when student teaching supervisors were assigned, I was placed under D.S., who was supposed to impartially evaluate my student teaching experience and grade me on it. Although I was uncomfortable with this arrangement, there was nothing I could do about it, and since we had remained at least superficially cordial since we stopped dating, I thought it would just be a bit sticky and not too damaging. I was sent to a local junior high school to observe a teacher as she taught her class.
