Co-opetition

Co-opetition signals the tension between differentiation and integration by driving the need to balance them judiciously in one product or organization. Since co-opetition depends on the interaction between cooperation and competition, there has to be enough differentiation to facilitate both. At the same time, however, there has to be enough integration to ensure smooth interaction. Differentiation and integration need to be delicately balanced to result in workable co-opetition. Products that are too much alike have no room to compete or cooperate; products that are too different have no common ground for interaction.
