Due to the large number of employee requests for new computer hardware, we have performed an analysis of the issue to consider whether purchasing the new equipment is feasible. As employees have pointed out, hardware costs have gone down markedly in recent years, making new purchases less of a financial burden than before. However, the cost of purchasing new equipment for virtually everyone in the company would still be considerable. There are advantages and disadvantages to both perspectives; however, our findings indicate that the greatest advantage would be found in buying new equipment as requested. Among the numerous reasons for this decision is the fact that the tradeoff between cost and productivity is reasonable given the current costs of new equipment and the increase in productivity that is possible if the equipment is purchased.One of the essential capabilities in our business is the ability to share information with vendors, customers, and potential clients electronically. Older equipment creates many problems in this area, as it cannot support software applications in common use by those sectors and requires our employees to use workarounds that are awkward and time-consuming. Such workarounds also convey to our publics that we either cannot afford equipment commensurate with what they are using or that we do not value technology; this is a perception that we cannot afford to promote.
