ôThe Gift of the Magiö speaks to me. I am the person who looks all year long for the perfect gift for a loved one. Once conceived, the thought of it troubles me with impatience until I am able to buy the gift. Once I have the gift in my possession, I am so impatient to give the gift to the special person I have chosen it for, that I can hardly stand it. At the ultimate moment when the gift is finally opened, I am waiting with bated breath to see what the personÆs response will be. When he or she responds with joy and delight, I am deeply satisfied; I want the moment to last forever. If I can tell that they are disappointed, it grieves me, because I have given the gift from my heart, nearly certain that it will give them pleasure. If I could give four perfect gifts to four treasured people, I would start with my mother. Having suffered through many years of an adversarial relationship with her, I have only just come into the golden years where we have finally bonded, and I have the mother I have always wantedùcaring, kind, and responsive. At this point, I am thrilled every day to have a relationship with her, and nothing would be too good for her. I simply adore her. Since my fatherÆs early death, she has suffered from loneliness. She is unable to sleep without the TV on to provide some semblance of companionship, and she misses the movies and TV shows that she watched with him when he was alive.
