Male Fantasies in TV Sitcom Love That Bob
This is an excerpt from the paper...
I recently had the pleasure of seeing some old TV shows from the fifties on DVD and was struck by how little male fantasies have changed in all that time. The shows were from the sitcom series, ôLove That Bob,ö starring Robert Cummings as a handsome fashion photographer who is always surrounded by a bevy of beautiful, adoring models. A confirmed bachelor, Bob has a series of ôlinesö and strategies that he uses to win over the women he dates, and these virtually always work despite their silliness. Bob has an old and dear friend, Harvey, who has been implicated in some of his schemes to win women. In one episode, Harvey reminisces about BobÆs often-used strategy of taking a date out to dinner in a restaurant where Harvey appears in a gypsy costume and plays the violin to serenade them. While Bob and his date are dining, he presents her with a dime-store ring for her pinky finger and tells her that when he gets back from military service they will move it to ôthe other fingerö (her ring finger). Of course, he completely disappears
