Music and arts programs have long been on the periphery in terms of receiving monetary support and the endorsement of schools. This is ostensibly because both parents and school administrators tend to regard such programs as somewhat frivolous nice-to-haves that can be quickly jettisoned in favor of basics such as English, math, and science. Music and arts programs do have significant benefits for students, however, and the fact that these programs are at risk does not bode well for education as a whole or liberal arts students in particular. An analysis of the benefits of the programs, the reasons these programs are at risk, and suggestions for how the programs can be saved will elucidate the issues surrounding todayÆs music and arts programs.Music and arts programs are regarded by many educational fundamentalists as peripheral and expendable. When education budgets are being cut, which tends to be almost constantly, music and the arts are often the first programs to go. However, in order to accurately assess the relative value of such programs, an investigation into their benefits for students needs to be conducted.
