Jonathan SwiftÆs satire is darker and deals more with satire about the human condition. VoltaireÆs satire pokes fun at the ridiculousness of philosophical optimism.

In Tartuffe, MoliFre satirizes religious hypocrisy, making excellent use of irony to ridicule not only the religious hypocrite but also the nanvetT of those who are taken in by him. Tartuffe, who is supposedly a religious ascetic, comes to live with a bourgeois family and is revealed to be a freeloader who wants to take over the family residence and fortuneùall under the guise of perfect religious piety.
