Sales Approach Job Offer

Staffing OrganizationsùSales Approach

The sales approach type of job offer has both advantages and disadvantages. When recruiting a candidate who is receiving impressive offers from other companies, it can help induce the candidate to accept the offer over the others. It can also give the candidate a good feeling about coming aboard, knowing that the company will be a good place to work. One of the main disadvantages is that there is a temptation to oversell the job or the company or to make promises that cannot be kept; this can produce a dissatisfied employee who may even resort to litigation over breach of promise. The Principles for Professional Conduct Committee created a Principles document to address just such issues; the document states that:

Employment professionals will refrain from any practice that improperly influences and affects job acceptances. Such practices may include undue time pressure for acceptance of employment offers and encouragement of revocation of another employment offer. Employment professionals will strive to communicate decisions to candidates within the agreed-upon time frame (ôExploding Offersö).

It is more advantageous to upscale the benefits you are offering a high-level candidate than to do a sales pitch. Some popular benefits include relocation reimbursement, sign-on bonuses, and a great health insurance plan (ôRecruiting Employeesö). Of course, salary is the biggest benefit for most people, so making sure that the salary is commensurate with the quality of the candidateÆs skills and potential is a must. It does pay to give a candidate reasons to accept your offer, such as emphasizing why your company is a good place to work and explaining advancement possibilities; even discussing what makes the corporate culture unique can be an incentive (ôMaking a Job Offerö). In the end, a balanced and honest presentation is most likely to obtain and retain the best employees.
