Personal Values Development

This is an excerpt from the paper...

The development of my personal values has come about through a variety of sources. One of the first influences was my close relationship with my grandmother, who was a Greek immigrant. She had a strong determination about the things she wanted to achieve and did not back down from anything just because it was difficult. Since we lived with her for the first four years of my life and my mother worked during those years, I became very close to her and acquired some of her inner drive. My grandmother also felt strongly about always doing the right thing, no matter what. I remember that one of her neighbors was taken to court in a case involving possible wrongdoing within his family, and many people had prejudged him before the trial. My grandmother, however, refused to testify to anything except what she had actually seen and heardùno hearsay, no conjecture, and no repeating of rumors. He was acquitted as a result of her testimony, and I have always felt that justice was done because of her fearless resolve to be honest.

I remember in the second grade, however, several of us students were teasing a classmate, who had been told to sit in a chair on the patio outside our classroom. We took turns pulling out the chair from underneath him to make him stand up, and th

I looked forward to seeing him every evening and would ask my mother several times throughout the day, ôIs Daddy coming yet?ö When he finally arrived, he would pick me up and hug me, then see what was for dinner. After dinner, we would play games or watch TV as a family, or often go for drives in the country. My dad loved drives. This family dynamic made an impression on me. I see other people whose fathers worked hard but became workaholics; they worked instead of being with their families. My dad never did that; he worked so that he could provide a better life and a better time when he was with us. He rarely bought himself anything; he enjoyed spending his money on his family instead. This great balance of work and play, earning and generosity, made my dad someone IÆve always tried to emulate. In my opinion, he got it right. The most impacting events in my life with regard to my values were the deaths of people close to me. When my grandmother
