Everyone wants to work for a boss who has ethics; someone who learns what is right or wrong and then does the right thing (McNamara). Working in an environment where ethical standards are being compromised is a problematical situation for any employee. Wanting to do the right thing conflicts with needing to keep oneÆs job, and this leaves the employee in an ethical dilemma that can be extremely difficult to resolve satisfactorily. I found myself precisely in this predicament when confronted with unethical behavior at a local college I worked at. My boss showed favoritism to two of his relatives, bumping other students out of the way to put his relatives ahead of the rest for a federally funded program that provided funds to 250 students per year, with the funds disbursed each month to 31 of the students totaling over $400, plus additional academic assistance. I ended up resigning my position over this dilemma, but I might have reported the behavior to a higher authority or tried to discuss it with my boss, or even with the relatives he favored. There are nearly always alternatives in such a situation, but sometimes none of them are truly desirable ones.The dilemma I faced when confronted with unethical behavior in the workplace was that I witnessed the behavior but had no authority to address it.
