In the cereal-making factory where I work, office automation would be a distinct advantage. All of the records are either kept in hard-copy ledgers or on standalone computers, and there is no group collaboration software to make it easier for employees to communicate within the plant. The packaging supervisor has to walk to the product supervisorÆs desk or find him out on the floor to discuss any synchronization problems between the two manufacturing areas, and since a pile-up between one area and the other can occur quickly in an automated environment, this can cause spills and product wastage, as well as machine jamming. Hitting the emergency stop button can cause as many problems as it solves, so manufacturing supervisors try to confer before doing so if possible; sometimes they can make adjustments that prevent their having to take down the line, which can result in manufacturing delays of several hours. Since the factory is very large, and the noise level is high, getting information to other people can involve walking a long distance or trying to talk above machine noise. Furthermore, since the computers that do exist are not networked, data is not easily shared, and there is no e-mail capability within the plant or to outside vendors and customers.
