Managing change is the primary task of the 21st century. With the advent of globalization, changes are taking place at an unprecedented rate, both in companies and at the personal level. The task of managing change refers not only to ôthe making of changes in a planned and managed or systematic fashionö but also to ôthe response to changes over which the organization exercises little or no control,ö such as legislation and political upheaval (Nickols). One of the great difficulties of change management theory is that it often excludes from consideration the very people who are most affected by the changeùthose who must undergo the change. In many cases, change management theory is developed in someoneÆs ivory tower and then unceremoniously foisted upon the actual worker bees, who must try their best to make it work. My experience with organizational change can testify to the need for the impetus for radical change arising from the people within the company, not from external advisors or disconnected officials at the top (Finnie).I am a high school teacher whose school has undergone a number of extensive changes involving rules, the dress code, leadership, and even the vision itself. These changes have been so radical as to seriously disrupt discipline in the school and leave the teachers in a quandary as to how to deal with the resulting inappropriate behaviors exhibited by the students.
