Two Feminist Essays

This is an excerpt from the paper...

Part I: Feminist and sociological theories can be applied to a discussion of masculinity to explain masculinity and offer solutions to contemporary problems associated with masculinity. A feminist theory that has implications for this type of analysis is separatist theory. Separatists believe that men and women should be separated from each other in order to enable them to ôsee themselves in a different contextö (ôFeminist Utopia: Feminism Definedö). Separation allows women to see themselves as women without pegging them to how they relate to men; likewise, men can see themselves as men without considering their masculinity in a male-female context but just as men alone. This separation is regarded as ôa necessary æfirst stepÆ for personal growth,ö and is not intended to be a permanent separation, just a step back to a simpler level (ôFeminist Utopia: Feminism Definedö).

This theory explains masculinity as a concept in itself without reference to femininity. A man is not a man in terms of how he relates to women but in terms of what a man is. He does not need to compare himself with a woman in order to assess his own masculinity. This theory offers a solution to all of the gender-related ills that result from a comparison between the sexes where one gender is seen as superior in quality or more powerful than the other.

The sense of a male-female relationship that is cooperative is very comforting to women, as well, since they then feel more cared for and see the relationship as more of a partnership. For men, this theory offers them the opportunity to do what they excel at, which satisfies their greater ego needs. It facilitates a concept of masculinity in which men are seen in their best lightùa perspective that not only makes men more comfortable but also improves their relationship with women. It provides a niche for each gender where there are contributions that gender can make, and it allows the genders to interact and develop mutual agreements through bargaining and cooperation. In terms of this theory, masculinity is not an overriding concept that subjugates women but a component of an equal pa
