EI & Loneliness Research Report

Emotional Intelligence and Loneliness Research Report

The research problem for this project was to determine whether there is a correlation, either positive or negative, between emotional intelligence (EI) and loneliness. The hypothesis was that people who are high in EI are less prone to loneliness than those who are moderate to low in EI. As detailed in earlier reports, some research has shown that EI was positively correlated with life satisfaction and had a negative correlation with loneliness, meaning that people high in EI generally did not tend to be lonely and those low in EI did tend to be lonely. The purpose of this project was to confirm or deny those findings by sampling subjects that would be tested both for EI and loneliness and correlating their scores.

For the purposes of the project, a group of 48 test subjectsù24 male and 24 female, all between the ages of 18 and 27ùwere given EI and loneliness testing in the form of the BarOn Emotional Quotient Short Form (BarOn, 2002 1-50) to measure EI and the UCLA Loneliness Scale (Russell, Peplau & Cutrona, 1996 472-480) to measure loneliness. All subjects were tested in isolation so that no peer influence could be exerted. After all subjects had completed both tests, the tests were scored and the scores were correlated.

The 24 male subjects had the following BarOn test results:

The same 24 males had the following UCLA Loneliness Scale test results:

The 24 female participants took the same tests. Following the BarOn testing, the results showed:
